why has this post-election monday morning quarterbacking, why has it lasted so long? >> i think it's because they lost. they lost in all levels, the president, the house, the senate and the federal level and the most popular game to play is kick the republican party to the point that even republicans, bobby jindal, newt gingrich and paul ryan allowed less of it. i think the problem republicans are grappling with right now and my colleague just reported on this today is the question of whether they need to change their messaging or change their policy, and what it sounds like is the decision will be to change the messaging. oftentimes when parties lose it's hard to say our values are long and our approaches are long and the way they're communicating them are wrong and that's what we're seeing for republicans and this is nothing new. every party they have a fundamental question and they always say it's about packaging and the environment changes and then they move up and the other guys move down. >> you mentioned messaging and policy, and what you did not mention was me

if you look back at the election, president obama began running as soon as he was elected in 2008. and mitt romney's campaign was six months long. from getting into communities and organizing and listening to voters and hearing their concerns, the obama campaign had more time and allowed them to do a better job. so, going forward that is something that we need to do and make sure that we are living in communities and talking about the republican party and the brand. not just in the two months before an election but all of the time. >> tim, here is the thing, that is strategy talk and we have heard talk about messaging as well. but what about the messengers. what about the actually people who are going to be putting out the beliefs of the republican party? has there been talk about changing those? >> the republicans have a deep bench, look at marco ruio, bobby jindal. we have a lot of young leaders that have been successful on the state level and we need to look to the states and learn from them. we have 30 republican governors if we won the electoral vote in all 30 states we would

the republican electorate woke up the day of the election and say, we do have a latino problem. and it's not a surprise that lindsey graham is part of the negotiations. his state is changing. he received a new congressional seat back in 2010 because of the growth in latino vote. if you start looking at where there's a huge population boom, in the next phase of the population boom for the next election, it's all in the south. so it's in their best interests for the republican party to ensure that they're seen out in front. because otherwise, they're going to have a very tough battle moving on, to win not just the senate, but also the white house. >> so you talk about the south. let's talk about kentucky. we get this from mitch mcconnell and his statement on this. take a listen, "when the president addresses this issue today, i hope he will take a bipartisan approach, rather than delivering another bipartisan speech." we know that this is going to be a pretty progressive speech. the president is really going to swing for the fences here. >> yeah, he is. but, look, he's punted to c
